When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from their royal duties and relocated to sunny California, leaving Britain behind, the late Queen Elizabeth requested that they no longer use the name “Sussex Royal,” as they were no longer working royals.
At the time, their Instagram and website were under the name Sussex Royals. After the birth of their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, in 2019, they launched “Archewell” for their website and production company, honoring their firstborn.
However, following King Charles’ coronation, the couple decided to change both Archie and Lili’s names and officially adopt the surname Sussex for their children.

Prince Harry received the Sussex title on the day of his wedding to Meghan in May, 2018.
When Archie was born, he was not given a royal title due to a convention that limited titles to the monarch’s grandchildren, with the exception of those born to the direct heir to the throne.
However, after the passing of Queen Elizabeth and King Charles ascending to the throne, both Archie and Lili were granted the titles of Prince and Princess, which their parents decided they would use.

Recently, The Office star Mindy Kaling referred to the Duchess of Sussex by her maiden name, Markle, prompting a quick correction from Meghan.
“You keep saying Meghan Markle, you know, I’m Sussex now,” Meghan responded. “You have kids, and you go, ‘Now I share my name with my children’… I didn’t realize how meaningful it would be, but it really does mean a lot to me to say, ‘This is our family name, our little family name.’”
However, the recent change of Archie and Lili’s last name from Mountbatten-Windsor to Sussex has sparked some backlash.
“Instead of rebranding, I’d rather see them actually accomplish something. It’s all just spin, and it’s pretty sad,” one person commented.
“For someone who wanted to distance himself from the royal family, he seems to want to stay connected to both sides,” another added.
“This pair will do anything to stay in the limelight. Complete hypocrites. For a couple who wanted privacy, they sure manage to stay in the media,” a third chimed in.

Harry and Meghan also rebranded their website to Sussex.com.
They believe that the new name will “unify” their family.
